London businesses are braced for a 'siege' as they prepare for violent protests when May Day protesters take to the streets of Mayfair, reported The Observer (p7).

Many central London shops plan to board up windows and have told staff to take the day off. The police operation, involving at least 5,000 officers, is expected to cost£500,000, while Westminster City Council officers and businesses estimate the cost in lost revenue will be£20-£40m.

Police expect more than 10,000 to take to London's streets in a day of anti-globalisation demonstration. Though they admit most protesters will be peaceful, police expect 300 to 400 will be intent on violent action.
