Pollution from buses and taxis on London's Oxford street is far worse than previously thought, according to new research, the Evening Standard reports (p6).

A Westminster LBC spokesman said: 'We are frightened by the amount of pollution in Oxford Street when you consider no cars go along there. We have tried to put pressure on bus companies to use less environmentally damaging fuel but most of them have refused'.

Westminster's deputy Labour leader, Peter Bradshaw, says the problems of Oxford Street need to be looked at in a wider context.

'We should be looking at long term investment in a comprehensive public transport system for London, not a piecemeal approach'.
