London council tax payers will be forced to foot the bill for extra policing for the capital, the Association of London Government has warned. (LGC magazine, p7)

Members of an all-party ALG delegation met with senior Metropolitan Police officers last week to hear that, while the Met's budget will go up 3.4% for 1997-98, the government's refusal to fund the increase in full will put up police precepts on council tax.

Londoners will have to contribute an extra 14.4% towards police costs, according to the ALG. The association estimates that the police precept on a band D council tax bill will be£57 against£49.84 in 1996-97.
