Fire brigade union representatives say strike action in London is now inevitable as a dispute about cuts deepens, reports the Evening Standard (p6).

Firefighters from all over the capital met last night to plan a series of four nine-hour stoppages over a £25m cut to the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority's budget which is forcing it to close four stations.

A further 22 stations could lose one fire engine and 650 jobs would go over the next three years in the cuts, the paper reports.
