House prices in many parts of central London have surpassed the 1989 peak, reports the Independent (p24).

Nationwide Building Society research head Philip Sanderson said a shortage of properties coming onto the market was driving prices up.

In its last analysis, the building society said house prices in Greater London had risen 20.6 per cent in the year to the first quarter, to an average of£85,378. This contrasted with a national average increase of 8.6% and a decline in Scotland of 0.5%.
