Contract Journal (p1) reports that the Environment Agency is considering plans to relocate London. Fears are apparently mounting that global warming and rising water levels could make the capital uninhabitable. It is estimated that sea levels could rise by 500mm by the middle of the next century, which would mean the loss of land around The Wash in east England and Somerset, as well as coastal towns like Blackpool and Southend in Essex. The agency estimates that a£3bn investment programme will be needed in London alone to bolster the 120km of river defences against the prospect of wide-scale flooding.
