LONDON LOSES STADIUM POLL

The national stadium should be built in Birmingham and not on the old site at Wembley according to a survey of football supporters, reported Sunday Business (p2).

The survey will be another blow to those campaigners, including London mayor Ken Livingstone, who want the arena built in the capital.

Two-thirds of those surveyed said they prefer Birmingham.

One of the arguments put forward by those backing London is that tradition binds supporters to Wembley. That image has now been shattered and gives the government ammunition to push ahead with an out-of-London national stadium.

The government, grown weary by the protracted Wembley saga, is willing to provide cash to help build a stadium near the National Exhibition Centre.
