Prime minister Tony Blair has urged Londoners to back plans for their own directly elected mayor and promised that the post would have 'real power'.

The Guardian, (p8) reporting on Mr Blair's speech before a debate at London's Guildhall, said that the prime minister pledged: 'There is no question that the mayor will have the power to change things for the better. On transport, crime, jobs and the environment the mayor will have the power to make a difference and will be expected by Londoners to do so.'
