The Corporation of London has agreed to share the Guildhall with the head of Labour's proposed Greater London Authority, reports the Evening Standard (p2).

Meanwhile, in an editorial (p9), the paper says Labour's plans for a directly-elected Greater London Authority is a move in the right direction.

However, it underplays the vital importance of a figurehead who could preside over the authority and, also directly-elected, represent London at home and abroad.

'Almost every great city in the world has a mayor who fulfils this role.'

On page 16, the Standard suggests 16 people who might be nominated if there were to be a mayoral election.
