London's overground suburban rail services will be united under one name, London Rail, with one fare structure, under a scheme being prepared by Transport for London and the Strategic Rail Authority, reported The Business (p2). Pilots of the scheme will start in south London next September.

Commuter fares into the capital vary wildly because lines are run by different train operating companies. London Rail would have one fare structure so people can 'hop off the bus and onto the train'.

The national rail timetable would be torn up under the scheme, which London mayor Ken Livingstone and his transport commissioner, Bob Kiley, want to be up and running within five years.
