A comprehensive school in the south London borough of Wandsworth has become the first to receive permission to select pupils on the basis of their aptitude for modern languages, the Daily Telegraph reports (p5).

From next September Chestnut Grove School in Balham will reserve 30 places a year for 11-year-olds with high linguistic talent.A further 30 will be reserved for pupils showing particular potential in art and design.

Pupils selected will study intensive courses and take exams early.
