Commenting on the report that the government is planning to divert cash for deprived London youngsters to former colliery areas in the north, at the expensive of taking away£200m from London's schools, Richard Ottaway, Conservative spokesman for London said:

'It is a body blow for London to be losing up to£200m in rate support grant. This will be coming out of the education budget which will be reduced by up to 10%. The money will be extra funding for the new coal fields regions.

'However, most disturbing for London is the reasoning behind the switch in resources. This is attributable to dropping ethnicity from the deprivation and need indicator. This is a critical policy change in educating ethnic minorities. To ignore the needs of the ethnic communities in London's most deprived areas very serious indeed.'
