In an editorial today the Evening Standard says that for 20,000 people to be stuck underground for hours in a great 20th century city like London is 'shabby and shameful and disgusting'.

The paper says yesterday's halted trains came close to becoming a tragedy with people freezing in immobile carriages and dangerously thin air.

London Underground has been let down on the investment front, it says and says Mr Gummer should bend the Chancellor's ear before the Budget. The editorial ends by asking everyone caught in the delays to write an angry letter to the Environment Secretary.
