Former foreign secretary Lord Carrington is leading a campaign to save Buckinghamshire CC, BBC Three Counties radio reports.

Lord Carrington leads the Friends of Buckinghamshire, a group opposing the Local Government Commission's proposal to abolish the county council and have four unitary authorities.

The group, which includes many leading Conservatives, says the commission has misread the views of local people. There is no widespread support for these proposals and unwanted change in the county could cost the taxpayer £18 million in the next year, it says.

BBC Three Counties also reports that in Bedfordshire, two of the county's largest employers have condemned the commission's plans for single tier authorities. Brewers Charles Wells and construction firm Wilmott want the status quo to be an option in Bedfordshire.
