A medical man has been chosen as Lord Mayor of London for the first time in about 300 years, reported The Daily Telegraph (30 Sept, Business News, p18).

John Calstrey, a surgeon at Bart's hospital, was chosen on Friday, and takes over in November, the day before the Lord Mayor's show. The last surgeon was a barber, who like most hairdressers of the day dabbled in amputation and bloodletting, says the City Corporation, the paper reports.
