District auditors have published an unprecedented 17 public interest reports into 'mismanagement and incompetence', Viscount Allswater, minister of state at the DoE, told the House of Lords (16 March col 927).

The statistic came in a debate about the district audit report into Wandsworth LBC's housing policies and a political exchange over which party had the worst record in local government.

In answer to a question as to what action the government intended to take over the Wandsworth case, the minister said that the government 'have no role to play' in the issuing of a public interest report by the district auditor in Wandsworth or anywhere else.
