Denbighshire CC is appealing to the Welsh Office for extra money to allow it to satisfy European inspectors and prevent nearly£6 million of grant money being lost.

A team from the European Commission visited the council two weeks ago to check it was complying with basic requirements for a European regional development fund grant worth£1.125m.

The council says it spent the equivalent of two years of an officer's time preparing for the visit. A team of officers examined the records for the grant, which dates back to 1991 and previous council Rhuddlan BC. 'We had to go back to the original application and try to create a file from scratch,' said finance director Nigel Thomas. 'Nothing which should have been there was there.'
