Waveney DC has won a £70,000 grant from the national lottery towards plans to construct a giant glass monument on the Suffolk coast to mark England's most easterly point.

The East Anglian Daily Times (p32) reported that the money will enable the council to carry out a study into the technical viability of constructing the Flotilla of Sails sculpture out of glass blocks along the sea wall at Lowestoft.

Waveney DC leader Bob Blizzard said: 'We hope to create the largest glass sculpture in Europe if not the world.

'I believe the Flotilla of Sails will be as valuable to Lowestoft as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris.'
