Plans to widen parts of the M25 in Surrey to 14 lanes, which are opposed by local councils and some Conservative MPs, were put in doubt by the government's decision to postpone a public inquiry indefinitely, The Daily Telegraph reported (16 July, p8).

The M25 inquiry was due to start in November, but roads minister Robert Key acknowledged on Friday that the delay reflected the strength of feeling about the £165m scheme, the paper reported.
