John Magill, the auditor pursuing the last of the Westminster homes-for-votes

allegations, has said he will withdraw from the case if it goes on any longer.

In a letter to objectors and Westminster City Council, Mr Magill concluded most of the remaining allegations justify no further investigation.

Westminster's director of legal services Colin Wilson said: 'The work the auditor has undertaken to get this far has cost the council around £250,000.

'The council hopes the objection will be withdrawn, or that the Audit Commission will decide that the matter need not be referred to another auditor.'
