Westminster's district auditor John Magill has named 30 councillors and officers - including Tory MP Barry Legg and for the first time lord mayor Robert Davis - in his latest investigation into alleged misuse of council money to buy votes.

The Evening Standard reports (p6) that the new allegations surround attempts by the council to clean up pavements and prettify areas of key marginal wards under the Shirley Porter-led Building Stable Communities policy.

In a confidential letter to all those involved in the new inquiry, Mr Magill's lawyers say he is now starting preliminary work on the probe.

Labour opponents claim that 'many of those let off the hook are back on the hook,' the Standard reports.
