John Major yesterday denied Labour claims that he approved two of Britain's most monolithic estates in the 1970's, reports The Guardian (p3).

'The buildings I am supposed to have been responsible for were designed and approved by the labour council before I was elected to the council, let alone became housing chairman.', he said.

The Lambeth LBC minutes show that one of the schemes was first proposed by the previous Labour administration but Mr Major then gave it the go ahead, says The Guardian.
