Prime Minister John Major last night hinted that more police powers could be devolved to Wales, the Western Mail reports (p3).

Responding to a question from Plaid Cymru MP Elfyn Llwyd, Mr Major said the distribution of powers within Whitehall was being kept under review.

The police review currently underway at the Home Office is likely to lead to larger, more regional police authorities, less dominated by councils, the Mail says.

One option being discussed in the Welsh Office is for the new chief constables to be accountable to the Welsh secretary rather than the Home Office.
