John Major yesterday warned local authorities against sacking teachers, as the government's public sector pay policy came under siege form staff in schools and hospitals, reports The Times (p4)

And Gillian Shepherd towed the same line, warning school governors not to try to reduce their numbers in an effort to get round the cuts (p3).

The education secretary also said yesterday that Britain spent more on education than Japan, Germany the Netherlands and France.

The Guardian focuses on yesterdays protests in London where 1,500 people gathered to lobby their MPs about education cuts, and looks at the effects on a school in Dorset.
