Over half of Welsh 16-year-olds are opting to stay in full-time education thanks to new qualifications offered by schools and colleges, the Western Mail reports (p5).

Welsh Office figures show a healthy 53% of 18-year olds were in education during 1992-1993 - almost half as much again as four years ago.

West Glamorgan has the highest rate of sixth formers, with 51% staying at school or going to further education colleges, the paper reports.
