John Major's announcement that a private company will maintain the A69 between Newcastle and Carlisle has been condemned by all three local authorities involved in the route, reports The Journal (p11).

The councils say that the involvement of a private firm will lead to job losses and they claim the move is the first step towards charging motorists.

The Journal says the Cumbria CC, Northumberland CC and Newcastle City Council will be engaged in delicate negotiations with the likely successful bidders, Roadlink. to try to secure future sub-contracting maintenance work for their highways workers.
