Manchester City Council has set out guidelines for staff which rule out 'luv and 'mate' as suitable forms of address between workmen and tenants, The Guardian reports (p10).

In a note to council joiners, plumbers, electricians and other tradesmen in the Wythenshawe district the council expressed no opinion about 'petal' but said customers were best addressed as Mr, or Mrs, Sir or Madam.

The letter has been greeted with a chorus of disapproval by staff and public with one tenant saying she would not like to be addressed as 'madam' because 'it makes you think of prostitutes'.
