The Fire Brigades Union has threatened strikes in Greater Manchester unless the fire authority rethinks its decision to cut jobs and equipment, reported the Manchester News (April 22, p7).

Savings of£1.1m are planned in Manchester through the loss of 36 jobs (including seven compulsory redundancies) and non-replacement of equipment. Consultation over the plans is due to end on May 31.

Meanwhile, the East Anglian Daily Times reports (p9) that fire brigade strikes in Essex are continuing with today marking the third strike in five days and no resolution in sight.

Officers are striking over cuts of£1.5m which they say will lead to job losses and downgraded training, recruitment and equipment.

The FBU has called two further strikes on April 29 and May 2, despite warnings from the authority that striking staff face suspension.
