Manchester City Council believes the '24 hour city' has contributed to the regeneration of the city centre, BBC Radio Four's Today programme heard this morning.

Pat Carney of Manchester City Council told Today Manchester has the fastest-growing city centre in the UK. Next year there will be 10,000 people living in the city centre, compared with 1,000 in 1990, he said.

The regrowth of the city means more night-time opening. 'Those city dwellers are saying they want more choice in terms of leisure, access to shops, access to banking. That's the nature of our cities, the way they are going at the moment', Mr Carney said.
