A new campaign was launched by Manchester's Olympic leaders today to build their £200 million starship style stadium 'come what may', the Manchester Evening News reports.

The paper says the city's Olympic leaders want it to be built in East Manchester whether or not the city goes for the 2004 Olympics or not.

And they want the government to put a massive amount of cash towards the stadium with a designation of the stadium as a Millennium project.

The paper reports Manchester leader Graham Stringer as saying that Crystal Palace and Wembley are second and third rate venues. 'The location in East Manchester is ideal'.

Also reported is the research now underway by Manchester Olympic supremo Bob Scott to find out 'did we ever have a hope?'.
