Manchester City Council has paid out more than£33,000 to a cleaner who was injured when she was emptying a bin bag in to a skip, reported The Manchester Evening News (17 April, p25).

Yvonne Lawless, who has been unable to work since the accident in July 1995, was originally offered£1,500 to settle her claim for compensation.

The council denies responsibility for the accident and has not commented on the payment to Ms Lawless. A council spokesman said: 'I believe the council has very stringent rules regarding lifting and so on.'
