Manchester is refusing to accept that it has lost its attempt to house the new national sports stadium.

The Football Association's announcement yesterday that it backs the Wembley bid for the £200m lottery funded project, means that the Sports Council is almost certain to decide in favour of the London venue.

But project leader Howard Bernstein on behalf of Manchester City Council said they would definitely not give in, reports The Guardian (p24).

'At the end of the day we believe the significant and decisive influence is the Sports Council. We are happy to see out proposals discussed and scrutinised and will be submitting our bid as planned.'
