Manchester City Council has won the right to build a £30m swimming complex for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

The Manchester Evening News reports that the council will apply to the Sports Council for a £19m lottery grant. Manchester intends putting in £4m of its own cash, with another £4m coming from three loal universities and another £3m from banks.

The centre, which should be completed by 1999, will be run by the council in partnership with the universities, and will be open to the public.
