Peter Mandelson is at loggerheads with the Labour Party in his Hartlepool constituency over whether or not the town should have a directly elected mayor.

The constituency party has declared its hostility to the idea of elected mayors, while Mr Mandelson has supported the policy for many years. Hartlepool BC is to have referendum on 18 October.

Hartlepool Labour group member Ray Waller, said: 'The party has come out against it, the Labour group has to make

a decision. When it does, it needs to

take account of the constituency party's views.'

The Labour group will decide its stance on Monday. Mr Mandelson was unavailable for comment.
