In a report from the Association of County Councils' conference in Cumbria the Yorkshire Post says that shire chiefs fiercely attacked the government over its handling of council reform (p8).

The paper says that Dennis Pettitt, ACC chairman, claimed ministers seemed set to force particular solutions down people's throats and that local government was being pushed around 'like pawns on a chess board' with changes being made almost daily.

Mr Pettitt went on to say, says the Post, that change should be considered where local people obviously want it. 'But let us be sure that any new structure would be better at providing services.'
