Capita has won a£400m contract to partner the Home Office in running the new Criminal Records Bureau.

The bureau, announced in December 1998, will issue certificates outlining the criminal record of any prospective employee or volunteer to help employers and charities protect children and vulnerable adults.

Capita will develop IT systems, process applications and issue certificates from a base in Liverpool which is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs.
