Two companies have been shortlisted to run Portsmouth City Council's private finance initiative highways maintenance contract.

Amey and Colas are the final two firms to be considered for the 25-year contract, which is due to start in October next year.

Amey Highways managing director Chris Webster said: 'The Portsmouth PFI offers us a great opportunity to extend our highway management portfolio.'

Phil Shaddock (Lib Dem) said: 'Our city's 400km of roads, pavements, street lighting and other highways structures are in urgent need of investment and this PFI is our solution.'
