St Helens MBC's entire housing stock has been sold off to Helena Housing for£27.7m in a bid to allow a programme of repairs to go ahead.

Helena Housing will spend£200m over the next seven years as part of a package that will see 1,800 of the 14,000 homes demolished.

Housing minister Tony McNulty said the deal 'should guarantee a sustainable stock of high-quality housing, and remove the blight and associated crime created by large numbers of empty flats and houses'.
