Plans by Northampton BC to protect trading at the town's market from the threat of car boot sales will be monitored by other market towns, reports The Guardian (p12).

Northampton says charity fund raising events are also suffering as traders and site operators cash in on the car boot culture.

It also wants to prevent any commercial traders taking part in any event, including those run by charities, the paper reports.

Finance sub committee chair Geoff Hawes is quoted: 'We have a duty to protect the market's interests and make sure there is not unfair competition. It is not a question of being killjoys.'
