Curriculum advisors to the government have said that they were wrong not to stress the importance of marriage when drawing up a statement of values for schools.

The Daily Telegraph (p4) reports that the school curriculum and assessment authority (SCAA) announced that it had agreed a compromise over the issue which caused a rift among members of the forum formed to draw up the guidelines.

Education secretary Gillian Shephard entered the public debate which followed, calling for family values to be strengthened in the statement.
