Controversy over masonic links has surfaced in Dorset after a county council member resigned from a committee which approved a £200 million waste disposal contract.

David Jewitt left Dorset CC contracts sub-committee after revelations that he and a businessman Albert Marsden with the successful company Drinkwater Sabey were both members of the same masonic lodge.

Mr Jewitt said: 'I resent the implication that I have done anything untoward.' He said he and Mr Marsden barely knew each other. 'Freemasonry is not a secret society: it is a society with secrets.'
