Matthew Banks, MP for Southport, has been appointed parliamentary private secretary to David Curry, minister of state for local government, housing and urban regeneration, and Robert Jones, minister of state for planning, construction and energy efficiency.

Mr Banks was elected member of parliament for Southport in April 1992. He was born in 1961 and educated at Hellesdon in Norfolk, Calday Grange School near Chester, Sheffield City Polytechnic and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He was Commissioned into the 1st Battalion, The Gordon Highlanders, in 1981.

Before entering parliament, Mr Banks worked in banking and was a Wirral borough councillor. He served as chairman of the schools committee between 1985-86 and chairman of the works committee between 1986-87.

He is currently a member of the House of Commons select committee on transport.
