Walsall MBC mayor Richard Worrall has unveiled costcutting plans for staging the mayoral banquet in 20 restaurants across the borough, instead of the town hall, after describing the budget for the banquet as 'obscene'.

The Birmingham Post (p3) reports that the banquet on 9 May will start with about 300 people gathering at the town hall and then being taken by coach to the restaurants. Fewer VIPs have been invited and the event has been thrown open to wider cross section of the community.

The mayor said of the£8,500 budget: 'When you are being forced to cut services, to have such a sum is unnecessary. When cuts are being made, nobody clocks on to the fact that nothing has touched the mayoral banquet budget.'
