The mayor of the north Devon town of Ilfracombe is using his special £400 fund to send unemployed people back to where they came from, reports The Daily Telegraph (p3) and the Daily Mail (p27).

Mike Edmunds says if his fund runs out he will pay for the fares himself.

Unemployed people had been attracted to Ilfracombe - which has 807 registered on the dole - after a advertisement was placed in newspapers in the Midlands promising 'a fresh start in North Devon.'

It was placed by a company which runs a number of hotels in the area, the papers report.
