Liberal Democrat local government spokesman Don Foster, commenting on

the resultsof the mayoral elections held yesterday, said:

'The Labour Party gimmick of directly mayors has failed to rekindle voters'

interest in politics.

'When will Labour learn that the only way to re-engage local people with

local politics is to liberate local councils from central government

control? Only then can councils truly meet the needs of local people.

'People must feel that their council has the power to act and resolve local

problems.'
