Hackney LBC's embattled Labour leader John McCafferty this week insisted the council should retain a formal leader even though the 'Hackney New Labour' revolt has plunged the authority into no overall control.

The council was due to meet last night and, while not on the agenda, a move to amend standing orders - which would ultimately oust Mr McCafferty - was expected.

The Liberal Democrat group, which has been in discussion with the 17 breakaway members, favours a 'no leader' solution, with rotating committee chairs.
