Environment minister Michael Meacher's cottage in his Oldham constituency contrasts sharply with much of the accommodation on offer to other people in the town, reported the Sun (October 2, p7).

As part of its coverage of the scandal over the minister's three homes, the paper pointed out that while Mr Meacher's cottage is an attractive building in a sought-after part of town, in central Oldham there are 1,000 old back to back terraced homes which cannot be sold, many of which need urgent repairs.

Oldham MBC is quoted in the paper as saying that 13 per cent of its houses are unfit for habitation.
