Disciplinary hearings have been carried out against 25 employees of the Meat Hygiene Service, the quango established last year which took over local authority inspection duties, reports Radio 4's Farming Today programme.
This results from failures to ensure full compliance with controls of specified bovine offal.
In its annual report the Meat Hygiene Service admits that to date one employee has been dismissed, 15 have received formal disciplinary warnings and nine others have been given a formal written caution.
Only one slaughterhouse has been prosecuted, but several more are under investigation.
