Medina BC was poised to take legal action as LGC went to press if a meeting with the Staff Commission due yesterday failed to resolve a dispute over staffing of the new Isle of Wight unitary authority.

Medina claimed last month that Isle of Wight CC was set to implement a policy for transfer of staff to the new authority which discriminated against borough staff (LGC, 15 July).

The county said as a continuing authority it had certain obligations to its own staff, leading to a deadlock which the Staff Commission is attempting to break.

Medina personnel manager Alan Greaves said the borough had now taken counsel's advice which said it had a case to take before the courts. 'We intend to take legal action if we cannot solve the problem with the Staff Commission as we appear to have failed to reach agreement through talks with the county'.

The final two posts for the shadow senior management team went to county officers although borough officers were interviewed.
