All Merseyside police officers are to be fitted with body armour at a cost of almost £1m, reports the Daily Post (p1).

So far, £135,000 has been spent on body armour and a further £715,000 will go on providing it for the remainder of the 3,500 officers.

Yesterday the police authority voted to cover the cost by cancelling a number of community policing schemes, school visits and CCTV schemes, and freezing recruitment.

Officers already wear bullet-proof vests in certain inner-city areas such as Toxteth.
